Just Laughs, Just Smiles, Just Kids!
Dr. Steven Chan
Location: Downtown
In a career spanning 48 years, I was the very first, formally trained pediatric dentist in the TriCity area. I’ve seen my babies – blossom into many walks of life. We have been fortunate – that parents – allowed us – to be part – of their kids’ lives.
We smile . . . when the babies – we once saw as patients – now are parents. They seek us out – to see their babies.
I’m a 3rd generation native Californian. I grew up in the town of dreams – Los Angeles. Graduating from UCLA, I headed cross country earning my D.D.S. at Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.)
I returned to L.A. for a hospital dentistry residency at a major trauma hospital. I completed a second residency – specializing in pediatric dentistry. I found my calling.
I served on the teaching staffs of Children’s Hospital Oakland, Kaiser Hospitals, and University of California, San Francisco. I am the longest serving dentist – on the medical staff – at Washington Hospital. I serve as an officer on a governing board – for the Washington Hospital Healthcare System.
I have been blessed – that my peers – chose me – to lead various dental organizations. I served as President of the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. I was a member of a Leadership Institute – at the Kellogg School of Graduate Management in Chicago.
Nationally, I served as President of the American College of Dentists (dentistry’s – national honor society). I was the 4th Californian in the 100 year history of the College to reach that ceiling. The College has engaged me to give presentations on leadership.
Appointed by two different governors, I have been serving on the state agency, the Dental Board of California. It is the agency that regulates the profession. I recently completed Presidency on that Board.
I still practice. It fascinates me what former patients recall about us.
I do a lot of gardening. I love musical theatre. Books from my personal library on leadership – now mean something different – from life experiences. I revel my time – just watching my grandchildren grow.
Then again, when I’m asked, “How many children do I have?”
I smile.
“Thousands!”
